Prophets Quartet...with some piano (and rockabilly guitar) artistry....

It was 1964. Beatlemania was sweeping the globe and our involvement in Vietnam was not quite the head scratcher it would soon become. It was during this exciting year that the Prophets Quartet released this 12 song LP on the world. I have selected two songs from this disc, both of which keep the toes tapping and the soul singing. "You Can Have Him", in particular, throws in some fine Rockabilly guitar to keep things moving. My thoughts change day to day on the subject, but for my money, during the early 1960's, the Prophets Quartet were second only to the behemoths that were the Blackwood Brothers and the Statesmen Quartets. They had the singing, the songs and the quality recordings. Sadly, the winds of change were blowing and fans of this style of  gospel quartet singing would soon find less and less of this sort of quality......

  1. Always loved the Prophets and especially Joe. I've never been certain who was singing bass on this recording. I've about decided it is a cross between Jay Simmons and Dave Rogers. I will try to remember to ask Ed Hill the next time I see him.
